Medeo and Shymbulak

Medeo is the highest ice rink located in the mountains of Almaty. Medeu is located at an altitude of 1691 meters above sea level and surrounded by small hills. They protect the area from any cold masses coming from Kazakh steppes in winter. That's how the weather is always milder there in winter and a bit cooler in summer than it is downtown Almaty. Just perfect  any time of the year.

“Shymbulak Ski Resort” is located in the beautiful Zailiyskiy Alatau mountain at 2,260 m above sea level. It is 25 km from the city center of Almaty City and has an average temperature of +25С in the summer and- 7С in the winter. The average   snowfall is around 1,5м. It is usually very sunny as the average number of sunny days a year can reach 90 %.  Ski season is normally   begins in December and can run into April.

Shymbulak – this is a place that has something for everyone with  a variety of routes, including the soft and gentle slopes for beginners and intermediates skiers and snowboarders as well longer trails for the experts., Shymbulak has a FIS downhill , wild valleys with untouched snow and terrain park  for new-scholars,  and special routes with moguls. Every year Shymbulak makes improvements to the trails.

Big Almaty Lake, Observatory, Sunkar Falconry center

Big Almaty Lake is natural alpine reservoir located in the Ili Alatau mountains which is 28.5 km south from the center of Almaty.

The mountains, Sovetov to the southeast, Ozyorny to the south and Turist to the southwest form a backdrop on all sides tothe lake, producing some spectacular reflections, changing colour throughout the seasons.  All three mountains are around the 4,000 metres high, with a glacial water running down towards the lake.

The lake itself is about 1km wide and 1.6 km long, with a depth of about 40mtrs. It can be accessed by road or by foot, although a bus ride to the beginning of the assent, places you directly into the scenic area.

Tien-Shan Astronomical Observatory was found in 1957 and belonged to Moscow State University Astrnimical Institute till collapse of Soviet Union, now it belongs to Astrophysical Institute in Kazakhstan and part of National Center for Space Research and Technology, 2750m above the sea level

South of Almaty, within close proximity to the Alatau – Eliy National Park, you will find “Sunkar” Falcon Farm. Started 25 years ago, boasting a huge number of falcons, eagles, other birds of prey and hunting dogs, this private farm is one of the rare places in Almaty where you can find falconry displays and breeding.
