Great street food tour with Tommy and Tracy - we were picked up at our hotel promptly, and immediately taken on a uniquely-Hanoi food tour around the Old Quarter. Both were very engaging, entertaining and informative about not only the food but the history of Hanoi. When crossing the road, they were thoughtful enough to guide us by being on the side of the incoming traffic. The best thing was that they were volunteers doing this out of their free time - this shows the level of enthusiasm they have for their city and in providing travellers with a truly local experience. Thanks Tommy and Tracy!

The tour guide was extremely dedicated (she came from an hour away). The sheer dedication and her enthusiasm was worth 100% of the tour.

My friends and I joined this tour without much expectation. It was a free tour, after all! They came promptly to our hotel to pick us up, and was very accommodating to our changes (both time, and dates). We originally had a party of 8, and dwindled down to 4 due to sicknesses, so 3 tour guides actually came! They were all very young, but also very eager to take us around and talk about the history and any information regarding Vietnam. We made a lot of requests to take us to places we originally did not ask about, and they were more than helpful in helping us find certain items and bring us to places they were not as familiar with. They brought us around the French Quarter and the Old Quarter, which was a lot of outdoor walking in the heat, but with all the sweating everyone was still in smiles and good spirits. They told us about this tour group and why it was formed, to educate their own youth (of Hanoi) about their own cultures and history and share it with tourists. It was all very meaningful, and with such hospitality and knowledge, I cannot give anything less than 5 stars. I still feel terrible we weren't ablt to give them any tips though!

Thầy Pagoda locates at the foot of Sài Sơn mountain, southwest of Hanoi. The pagoda is 20 kilometers far from the center of city, yet you can get there by motorbike in approximately 40 minutes. This a famous Buddhist pagoda is more than 8 centuries years old. The Pagoda is associated with Từ Đạo Hạnh 徐道行, a special Zen master of Vietnam who lived in Lý Dynasty. His reputation became a legend in memories of people of that land because of romantic anecdotes about his great magic and kindness. He had travel from lands to lands to help people without asking for return. Finally, when he is on the verge of death, Từ Đạo Hạnh went to Sài Sơn mountain (its colloquial name is Thầy mountain), and built a small pagoda named Hương Hải (it was changed into "Thầy" pagoda latter on). He died here in 1116, and accidentally in that year, King Lý Thần Tông was born. The myth that King Thần Tông was the afterlife of Từ Đạo Hạnh has been rumored from this event. However,Thầy Pagoda is not only attractive by these legends, but also charming for its ancient structures. Coming to this landscape, you will be stunned by the perfect harmony of the surrounding geography and Vietnamese traditional architecture. Visting Thầy pagoda, you will be enlightened by the beliefs of Vietnamese, people worship Buddha, God, Mother Goddess and Saint. Thầy pagoda is also famous for its mysterious limestone caves, the ancientest water puppet art of Vietnam, and enjoy a specialty of Thầy Pagoda : chè-lam cake. A trip with so much unforgettable moments, here we go :)
