    The historic city of Hampi was the capital of the erstwhile Vijayanagar Kingdom, the last of the great Hindu kingdoms that ruled the south of India. The ruins of the historic city are today recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site. The landscape around Hampi is decorated with boulders that are a huge attraction for the athletes of the sport - bouldering, from all around the world. The ancient river Tungabhadra cuts through the landscape and forms an island which the tourists have fondly named as Hampi Island; Virupapur Gadde being its original name. One can experience true hippy life even now on this island, the kind that made the beaches of Goa famous in the 60's and 70's. One can hire cycle from this island and reach Hanuman Hill or Anegondi for a magnificent sunset view. Hampi is deeply rooted in India's mythological stories and a visit to this place is a must for anyone setting foot in India.
