Kek Lok Si Temple

Kek Lok Si Temple is the largest Buddhist temple in Southeast Asia. It is located in Air Itam west of the city centre of Georgetown.

The temple’s construction began in 1893, inspired by the chief monk of the Goddess of Mercy Temple at Pitt Street. The Manchu Emperor Guangxu approved of the project, bestowing a tablet and gift of 70,000 volumes of the Imperial Edition of the Buddhist Sutras. Other Chinese rulers, such as His Majesty Emperor Kuang Xi and Empress Cixi of the Ching Dynasty, have been sufficiently impressed with the temple so as to have bestowed the temple with gifts.

The best time to visit Kek Lok Si is during the Chinese New Year celebrations, when the temple is adorned with thousands of bright hanging lanterns. At other times, there is still much to see, with prayer halls, pagodas, bell towers and a tortoise pond topping the list.

Its main draw is the striking seven-storey Pagoda of Rama VI (Pagoda of 10,000 Buddhas), completed in 1930. Boasting 10,000 alabaster and bronze statues of Buddha, its design symbolises the harmony between Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism, marrying a Chinese octagonal base with a middle tier of Thai design, topped by a Burmese crown. One can climb to the top of the pagoda via a steep flight of stairs and be rewarded with a great view of Penang. The 30.2m bronze statue of Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, is yet another popular highlight.

Penang Hill

Penang Hill is a hill resort comprising a group of peaks on Penang Island, Malaysia. It is located in Air Itam as well. A very short distance from Kek Lok Si Temple.

Penang Hill covers a number of hills, with the highest point at Western Hill which is 833 m (2,733 ft) above sea level. The hill stands out prominently from the lowlands as a hilly and forested area. It was used as a retreat during the British colonial period and is now a popular tourist destination in Penang.

The top of the hill is accessible via the Penang Hill Railway from its base station at Hill Railway Station Road.

Serve Your Stomach with Famous Street Food

Try out our famous local street food by the road or food court. Do not miss out our famous Char Koey Teow, Laksa, Satay, Nasi Kandar, Nasi Lemak, Cendol, Curry Mee and many more).

Upside Down Museum

Upside Down Museum is an interactive museum on in George Town. It offers a unique experience where only the humans are right side up!

Walking through the museum is like going around an upside down house. Visitors can go from room to room, seeing the upside down living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and there is even cafes and shops that are upside down.

Penang Peranakan Mansion

The Penang Peranakan Mansion is a museum dedicated to Penang's Peranakan heritage. The museum itself is housed within a distinctive green-hued mansion at Church Street, George Town, which once served as the residence and office of a 19th-century Chinese tycoon.

The mansion contains thousands of Peranakan artifacts, antiques, and collectibles, as well as showcasing Peranakan interior design and customs, such as the typical grand long dining table. Due to its unique architecture and interior design that reflect the lifestyles of the Peranakans in Penang, the mansion has been featured in television series and reality TV shows, such as The Little Nyonya, The Amazing Race and The Amazing Race Asia.

Penang Street Art

In conjuction with Penang’s Georgetown Festival, certain old walls within our dear capital has gained a new lease of life, thanks to the awesome efforts of Lithuanian artist, Ernest Zacharevic, Penang Street Art artist.

Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic is leaving his mark with many beautiful wall paintings of children all across historical Georgetown. The artworks are funny, fascinating, and very much open to everyone’s interpretations.

Clan Jetty

Clan Jetties form part of the Penang Heritage Trail. There used to be seven jetties until one was demolished by fire and now six remain. Billed as one of the last bastions of old Chinese settlements on the island, this waterfront society is home to houses on stilts of various Chinese clans. Located straight down from Lebuh Chulia (beside the Kapitan Kling Mosque) at Pengkalan Weld (Weld Quay), these water villages are over a century old. Each jetty is named after a Chinese clan – the Chew Jetty is the most tourist-friendly with the most stilt-houses, the longest walkway, a temple that is worth stopping by and plenty of places for those Kodak moments.

Avatar Secret Garden

A new attraction is in Penang and it is beautiful- the Penang Avatar Secret Garden. As the name may suggest, this attraction imitates the wonderful Pandora world from the blockbuster hit Avatar (2009). The movie shows the beauty of dazzling colours in the forest as they inspire and wow the audience. Now, Penang Avatar Secret Garden brings the movie to life.

It is located at Tanjung Tokong, this Penang attraction comes alive at night; many different lights are placed on trees to give a fantastic view like never seen before. The colours are vibrant and blend harmoniously to bring you into a dream-like fantasy. As you walk around and admire this beauty, you can take pictures and appreciate the dazzling display. This whole experience is free as there are no charges at all! As the highlight are the lights, it is best to come at night when the sky is dark for the colours to pop. There is also a seafood restaurant nearby for you to have a good meal and a temple to visit. This is quickly becoming a must-see attraction in Penang so bring your family and friends to the Penang Avatar Secret Garden!
