Hi there, I'm Tyler. I'm a lifelong Washington, DC resident who has been working in the photography industry since 2008. I'm a professional freelance photographer and regular contributor to several local publications. I also teach photography classes to middle and high school students. My love for my hometown runs really deeply, and I'm excited to share my combined passions for DC and photography.

Behind The Lens: Photographing DC From a Local Perspective

I've spent my whole life living in Washington D.C. and have spent almost as long taking photos. I became a professional photographer in 2008, and have spent several years documenting this city and sharing my passion for photography with everyone I meet. The museums and monuments are great, but what really makes this city special to me is the art, culture and people that's made by people here. So often, visitors don't get to see all the beauty D.C. really has to offer. I'm here to give you that opportunity, and help you gain some photo skills along the way. All you need is a camera, and for this, even your cell phone can count! No matter what your skill level... if you're an experienced pro, dedicated hobbyist, instagram addict or total newbie to photography who's just trying to take better vacation photos, I'll work with you to make sure you have a great time and create amazing photos along the way.

Street Art on Historic U Street

We'll meet midday at the U Street Metro station, and from there, I'll give you a tour of some of DC's best street art. From the 1920's onward U Street was at the center of African-American culture. U street was home to jazz musicians and poets from Duke Ellington to Langston Hughes. This part of town has gone through many changes since then, but it's creative roots still shine through. We'll explore today's vibrant street art juxtaposed on historic architecture, and maybe we'll even have a chance to stop and get a half-smoke at the historic Ben's Chili Bowl

Capitol Hill Architecture

From U Street, we'll travel to historic Eastern Market on Captiol Hill. Eastern Market is the oldest continually operating public fresh food market in DC. We'll photograph the colorful fruit, flowers and other delights inside the 137 year old market, and then explore hundreds of years of architecture in the Captiol Hill neighborhood. Capitol Hill is a great journey back into DC's history, sometimes so far back, you run into an original gas lamp from the 1800's that's still up and running.

Sunset Monuments

Yeah, yeah, I know, I said I'd give the true insider tour of DC. But hey, even a local can appreciate the beauty of the monuments as the sun is starting to set. We'll go down to the tidal basin and make creative photos of the monuments and museums that go beyond the typical postcard shots to close out our adventure.
