Waiheke Island has recently been voted the 4th best island in the world, the world's fifth best region and one which has also been described as an island ruled by artists, beautiful, blissed out and bohemian. Accordingly, this is a most unusual Triip. Guests will have the opportunity to spend time with a Waiheke 'celebrity', who just so happens to be one of the co-founders of Greenpeace, the person who bought and named the legendary ship the Rainbow Warrior which was bombed by the French in Auckland harbour in 1985. She will take you on a very personal tour of Waiheke Island where 6 of the original Rainbow Warrior crew live. You will visit the eco-village some of them have created, where they
live an almost self-sufficient lifestyle off the grid, although it is
less than 35 minutes by ferry to the largest city in New Zealand. The eco village is also home to New Zealand's first recognised Longfin Eel Sanctuary and you will try and spot the gigantic eel which resides in one of the village's streams. Then, you will walk up to an ancient Maori pa site overlooking Awaawaroa Bay and have a picnic, feasting on renowned Waiheke Oysters, washed down with some local organic wine while discussing the early history of the area.
