With more than 50.000 students on a population of just over 200.000 Groningen is the youngest city of The Netherlands. Groningen has an abundant variety of pubs and restaurants. The very compact inner city - with many cosy streets and historical buildings - is dominated by cyclists and pedestrians. Cars have only limited access. The inner city contains a lot of treasures, many of them hidden. Such as the
more than twenty 'hofjes', almshouses of which some were already founded in The Middle Ages. These monumental guesthouses were originally designed for the poor, the sick and pilgrims. Nowadays they are predominantly inhabited by the elderly. Some of them are built around courtyards. You can’t really visit these in large groups, that is why I limit the group size to a maximum of five. Apart from the almshouses, the inner city has many more attractive monuments which I can show you in a walking tour of one or two hours. Besides, I will recommend you my favourite bars and restaurants, where you can enjoy a good meal for a decent price. I can offer you two extended tours: to the beautiful Noorderplantsoen - just outside the
inner city - and to the Euroborg Stadium, a bit further away but still within walking distance. Same price, but the tours may take an extra hour. The Noorderplantsoen is the main venue for the yearly Noorderzon Festival at the end of August. This international crossover festival attracts many thousands of people from all over the world. The other 354 days the Noorderplantsoen is a lovely park where locals like to run or go for a walk. Euroborg is the stadium of FC Groningen, the club where Bayern Munich-star Arjen Robben enjoyed his football education and made his professional debut, and where Luis Suarez of Barcelona started his European career.
